Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to verify the effect of aromatherapy massage on body composition and serum lipid in obese women after menopause.

Method: The study was a non-equivalent control group pre-post test Quasi-experimental design. The participants were thirty five postmenopausal women who had abdominal obesity. Participants were randomly assigned to the experimental (18 women) and control (17 women) groups. All participants received a one time of whole body massage as treatment by the same researcher every week for 6 weeks. Participants also massaged their own abdomen two times everyday for 5 days each week for 6 weeks. The two groups used different kinds of oil. The experimental group used 3% grapefruit oil, cypress and three other kinds of oil. The control group used grape seed oil. Data were collected before and after the treatment using ZEUS 9.9(for body weigh, BMI and body fat %) and Hitach 7600 Auto-analyzer(for serum lipid). With SPSS/PC+Win 12 Version, Chisquare, Fisher¡¯s exect, t-test, ANCOVA were usted to analyze the data. Results: Body weigh and BMI in the experimental group decreased significantly after aromatherapy massage compared to in the control group(body weight: F=38.33, p=<.001, BMI: 10.59, p=.003).

Conclusion: These results suggest that aromatheapy massage could be utilized as an effective intervention to reduce obesity in obesity women after menopause.
